I've been listening to Sonny Rollins- The Bridge- with guitarist Jim Hall- the interplay between the two of them is truly amazing. How is that degree of musical telepathy achieved?

Practice, practice, practice. The group practices become much longer than the individual practices. I know - been there, done that - though not at the level of Sonny Rollins et al.

Hi wjk(wish people had real names):
You've picked one of the Jazz greats to listen to. Along with Jim Hall, Sonny is one of great Jazz minds living today. He's seen it all, heard it all, and played with all the greats.
I heard him live 20 years ago at Jazz at the Quarry at Saugerties, NY. His playing was truly inspired. He has worked with Jim for years, and they are on the same wave-length musically. That's why they sound so together, with such a wonderful groove.
You too can achieve that level of total musicianship, by living and breathing music ever day, every waking hour, for a lifetime.

Ask Jim Hall and he'll tell you that the secret is listening to each other. He says it's the most important thing in ensemble playing.
