I have a friend who used to play clarinet but cannot now due to breathing difficulties. I was wondering is there any other way of driving a clarinet other than a reed? Like say an electic replacement for the reed or some other way of blowwing it mechanically?

"Air boxes" repkacing the human embouchure have been used in scientific experiments. If you search the klarinet archives (try "artificial embouchure" to start) you'll get some references.
Some of the results are very interesting, to say the least.

There are several electronic instruments designed to imitate wind instruments. I've tried a Yamaha wind synthesiser which was fun. It's more like a saxophone than a clarinet (overblows the octave) but if you've got good gadgetry to plug it in to it's very versatile.

The nice part of the Yamaha is you change the settings and can play guitar or piano licks which is pretty neat if you want to make a homemade recording.
