I have an audition in a week, and have hit a huge dillemma. We are supposed to choose a piece to audition with. My options right now are the cadenza from copeland's clarinet concerto, and Bach's Giga dalla II Partita per Violino Solo, originally written as a violin solo but rewritten as a clarinet solo. They both are very technical pieces that show off my skill to some degree. But, the copeland is less conservative, and another clarinetist (who can play it a bit better than me, in my opinion) is trying out on the same piece. The Bach is not as fancy, and I don't need it for anything else (copeland is state audition music), but I do not know my new director, nor does anyone else, so don't knwo which he would prefer. All I know is he is highly trained and is a string player. Which solo would be better to go with?

Don't make the mistake of over-analyzing what someone expects, and worrying what someone else will play.
You only have a week. Pick one and get going!

Here is my $.02. Play the Copeland. Why? Because the Bach stuff is wonderful music and I love to play them, and there is so much to learn with phrasing and style etc. Probably the number one thing to learn from it is that you should never play them in public, they just don't work well on the clarinet.......paraphrasing several teachers and great players.
And as Mark said....get to work!

1. Ask your director which he prefers.
2. If you play the Bach, remember that it's a dance. Pick a tempo you could dance to. Don't move around too much, but make sure it has a dancy "swing."

Be true to the instrument you are playing and play the literature that is writen for it- clarinet music! That is what it was intended for, so seize the day and play play play!

(I am not saying that the other stuff ins't great too, it just makes sense that you are auditioning to play the clarinet so why not play the music that was intended to show it off and make it sound its best!)

Go for the Copeland because it was written for the clarinet.
Bach may not seem as fancy, but the musical aspects of the piece can be very, very challenging. This piece was written for strings and would most likely sound the best on strings.

Giga from Bach Partita No. 2 for Violin? I suppose you mean the trans. by Giampieri.
That is quite difficult for clarinet.
If I were the judge, I would be interested to hear your Bach instead of Copland.
