I was reading the accessory post and a few people mentioned having Q-Tips with their accessories. What are the Q-Tips for?

I use them to clean out tone holes and to clean around the keys where my rags dont pick up the dust and dirt without having to take the keys off. I take care not to get the lint from the q-tip around the posts though or catch on the springs. They can also be used to apply glue to a new pad if its a small one and you have big fingers like I do. I also use them to clean in and around the tone holes, and the cork grease buildup in the tenons and sockets, which I dip in water before doing it.

I hand them to the Viola players when we're tuning up...

I also use them to clean out the hard-to-get-to parts of my mouthpiece.

Susannah, they are the cotton swabs on a "toothpick" that you clean your ears with so you can hear if the bassoonists are in key.

The only thing I ever clean my mouthpieces with is Q-tips (aka cotton swabs). That way, anything (metal weight or just repeated usages) from the regular clarinet swab cannot damage or wear on the tips and rails of the mps.
