Since I've had a few requests for the Martin freres information I decided to post it here:

Martin freres WWI fl Paris c.1840-1927.
c.1840 established by the brothers Jean-Baptiste (b La Couture 26 January 1817: d Paris 22 August 1877), Claude Eugene (b La Couture 15 February 1819: d ibid 11 February 1874) and Felix (b La Couture 12 August 1821: d ibid 26 October 1896), with workshop at La Couture, show room in Paris; 1843 new clarinet ring-key mechanism; 1845 signatory of letter to War Ministry protesting about A. Sax; by 1885 succeeded as proprietor by Francois Jean Baptiste (b Paris 22 June 1862: d ibid 6 August 1923), listed as 'Martin freres J.-B. Martin succr.'; 1905 advertised use of steam-power; 1927 re-organized as 'SA des Anciens Ets. Martin' with Jean Martin proprietor. The marks 'Martin fils', 'J.F. Martin fils' have also been reported. Employed trade name 'Coudet'.

Mark, thanx for the M F info, would wish to know more re: the fuss?? with A Sax, maybe in Rendall, Groves etc?. Did they disappear in 1927 as indicated, believe I've seen more recent cl's than that? Is my grammAr improving? Is there any info re: Getzen? have an inquiry but havent done any looking up. TKS, Don

I have a Martin Freres Clarinet that was purchased over 30 years ago. Is this a good instrument? Should I spend the money to refurbish(pads only I think) for my 10 year old to play?

Probably. Just be sure to get a really good mouthpiece and good reeds.

My daughter plays clarinet and is very impressed with the Coudet, she prefers to play this to her selmer N series clarinets, she says it is easier to blow in the high register. Even though the clarinet is old and the keys dull.

I purchased a Coudet/Martin Freres at a garage sale for $75 and had it refurbished for $275 last year. It is a decent clarinet...but...the intonation problems between registers are significant. Anyone got any ideas about ways to help this?

I also play a Coudet and use a Ignatius Gennusa GE* Mouthpiece and Mitchell Lurie 4 1/2 and 5 reeds. Intonation problems are reduced significantly for me with this arrangement.
Mr. Gennusa's telephone number in Ocean City MD. is (410) 524-5887 if you cannot locate a mouthpiece at an area music store.

Thank you, Mr. Charette for your information on this site. I would like to ask a question about this brand. I purchased a Martin Freres 'Classic' that appears to be in pretty good shape. Serial # is 1180. Your information (I thought) states that this company manufactured clarinets from 1840 to 1927. I would not have guessed that this clarinet is that old. Did someone else use their marque?
