If you're in a sort of jazzy mood, would you prefer a Centered Tone or 10S. I can buy either for about the same price (slight premium on 10S). I don't want to overstate the jazzy business--I still appreciate hitting a note without sliding. Both are in excellent, reconditioned state.

Thanks, o' wise ones.

Pete

Pete,
I am not wise (I am, however, a 'wise-guy').....Whenever I'm in a jazzy mood, I pick up a saxophone and play. When I'm feeling classical, I play a clarinet.
That's all for now. Happy saxing!

Probably not the 10S. I've got several old Selmers, and the 10S definitely has stronger "classical" tendencies. The other horn has a little more "tizz" to the sound which works better for cutting through the band. Neither is particularly distinguished in the pitch/even scale department though.

Most of your jazz sound frankly is going to come from your technique and your mouthpiece. When I play dance band gigs, I use my trusty R13 and just put a more aggressive mpiece on it. On that basis, if either is a good horn with a good scale, you can make it work for jazz with the right setup.

Big pitch problems with 10S and 10G horns. They were one of the main reasons tuning rings were developed. Pertpetually sharp unless you use the specific mouthpiece recommended. The centre tones are getting a bit long in the tooth; buyer beware. If you are after an old Selmer for jazz playing try an N or O series straight 3/4 beohm and no low Eb and have it overhauled well.
