 Vandorens-what are better options?
Author: Katie

I've been playing on Vandoren V12's for five years now, but with the new cut they're using and the way the quality seems to be going down, I'd like to try some other options. Does anyone have any suggestions of other brands?

Hello - see the button marked "Search" - just type into it - this has been discussed endlessly here.

Gonzalez ("For Our Friends" - my choice; other kinds available). Available via Davie Cane Co., online or by phone. Very consistent, high quality.

Story of my life!!! Vandoren V12 has been a problem for a lot of musicians. I found some great alternatives to Vandoren. I now also use Gonzalaz FOF and Rico Grand Concerto Thick. Both are great reeds. If you prepare them "depaul style" then they will work for you, I promise you that.

On a side note something interesting.... If you look at the New M15 mouthpiece from vandoren... The new tip of the reed is a perfect match with their new mouthpiece. Personallly I think those mouthpieces are outstand, maybe you should try a few of them. You will probably find like my self, that v12's work better with the m15. Good luck.

I've written extensively about Gonzalez FOF reeds on a few occasions.

If you do a search on this site under my initials and Gonzalez (GBK Gonzalez) you will find my very positive reviews.

As for the "flatter tip" Vandorens:
For the 99% of the clarinet world who are not using their M15 mouthpiece (which I assume the new Vandoren reeds are meant to conform to) the change to a flatter tip was an outright disregard by Vandoren to the needs of clarinetists world wide and their previously loyal customers.

(and let's not even get started on the deterioration of their cane quality, which is now so apparent that more and more professionals are speaking out about it) ...GBK

There is a new company in Germany and they make very good reeds.
They have developed a new manufacturing technology with computer controlled machines for high quality and constancy. Sabine Meyer and many other weel-known clarinettists plays these reeds.
