 Bands - just do it

Tell me - out of all the clarinet family - is the contrabass the only one that will guarantee you don't get turned away from a community band? How does the E-flat rate as compared to the Alto, for example ... just curious to know of your personal experiences with your own community band

if your good enough, you shouldnt get turned down on any. But I would think the contrabass would be the least turned down.

The group to which I belong has never turned away any clarinetist, we treasure our one bass clarinetist (as well we should, she's great!) haven't had an e flat in several years and have never had an alto or contra. Oboists and bassonists come and go and are in more demand than the harmony clarinets at least with the arrangements we play.

charles - one should never make an assumption about the playing ability of anyone - no, I'd not get turned down for solo or first chair for that matter - my question was inquisitive and generic, really.

Diz... I'm sure Charles meant: "If one is good enough etc etc." and not to make it personal to you or anyone else.

Our community band hs never turned any instrument or player away that I can recall (been a member for over 40 yrs). We even hve a blind trombonist who has committed ove 100 parts to memory and continues to learn the newer publications by ear. Usually, one time through is sufficient. I have always thought that she fits our ensemble perfectly--none of us watch the conductor either!!! (sometimes)

I glad that you brought that up William.
(sorry to change the subject)
One of my best friends, with whom I play in the Church Orchestra with, is Legally blind. She can see some, but she has to put her face up to the stand to read the music. (she plays the flute by the way)
When I told her about the NEW community band here in Texarkana, she was VERY excited. She really wants to go with me tonight, but She is so worried about how they will react or treat her about her sight. Or even if they will be willing to accommodate her.

I am reasurring her that ALL will be fine. Just like our Church Orchestra. Any comments, or suggestions?

Thanks
Becky

Good for you BeckyC, I, and many other seniors, have vision problems, and desire an individual stand and parts so as to adjust focus-distance [and height], thats why I like the bass/alto cl over the Bb. Maybe a [cautious] mention to nearby players will solve problems and her concerns. Diz, our C Band accepts nearly every player who wishes [and is not afraid] to play with good musicians. At times our conductors suggest, more for volume, than for correctness, that only one per stand [cls and tpts, maybe tmbs/basses] should play, sometimes rehearsing individual, difficult passages several times with explanation/fingerings help, etc. It works wonders. Keep at it, Don

We play in two different community bands and one just loves the contras and basses. The other director hates them and feels the low stuff should be handled by the low brass or bari. As for the blind musician, we met a flautist who had everything in her memmory. She would take a new piece and have a friend walk her throught it measure by measure and she had it down mostly in one evening. At rehearsal the director would call for the flutes to play measure 249 or something and she could whip it out perfectly. I've always admired her skill and dedication.

Diz,
Our community band hasn't turned away anybody yet. (All the community bands I'm familiar with don't turn anybody away.) I might try to get an exception made for a bad Eb (soprano) clarinetist. A bad one is as bad as a bad oboist but, fortunately, easier to move to another instrument, e.g. Bb clarinet.

We've never had an alto, contralto or contrabass.
