First, What music is out there for woodwind quintet and piano besides the poulenc?

Second, In playing the shubert octet... how do you seat people? What arrangement?

James...If you check the Composition section on this site (use the pull down menu on this page) you will find more than 40 works for woodwind quintet and piano.

Even though there are some unfamiliar works listed, there are still plenty of recognizable "bigger name" composers (eg: Schumann, Riegger, d'Indy, Jacob, Francaix)...GBK

Schubert seating as follows:

Looking at the stage (from L to R):

Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Cello, Horn, Bassoon, Clarinet (all in a semi-circle with Violin I and Clarinet facing each other). Bass behind the semi-circle, generally behing the cello/horn area. Some prefer the bass directly in the center. See what the sound is like where you play it and make your own determination.

Terrific piece--great, great clarinet part.

Check out these two rather obscure composers - good pieces though adn audience pleasers:
Theodor Blumer's Sextet
Lugwig Tuille (sp?) Sextet

Larry - I once perfomed this work (playing clarinet) and we sat in a complete semi-circle with the audience around us and we were position in the middle of the hall.

It kind of felt odd as we had our backs to the audience, but not to those diagonally across from us. The concert worked very well and the audience were so curious at our unusual set up that they all made (mostly) positive comments at the end.

From an ensemble point of view it was terrific.
