 Academy Model?
Author: Jim S.
Date:   2002-08-15 06:37

Here is an Academy Model that is not from the 41xxx era. It is supposed to have a serial in the 9xxxx range. But even if the Carl Fischer tag does not belong to this clarinet, the keywork can be seen to be of a later period that the c. 1951 or 1952 period the Swiney spoke of.

Jim -

The tenon at the bottom of the lower joint has a metal ring. That means the area has been seriously damaged and reconstructed. Also, the bottom ring on the barrel is narrower than normal, meaning it's been cut down.

It might be a good buy, but it's an even bigger risk than usual. I wouldn't touch it without a money-back-for-any-reason-or-no-reason guarantee.

Best regards.

Ken Shaw

Thanks. Yes, I wondered why the metal ring, thought perhaps Buffet once-upon-a-time used them like Selmer. As I look again, with your instructions, I see that the tenon ring on the bell looks wider than normal also, probably to compensate for the cut on the tenon.

I think the wider ring at the top of the bell is an optical illusion. Look at the picture lower down with the bell out of the case, where the ring is normal width. If that ring is in fact wider than usual, it means that the bell has been badly cracked and needed extra reinforcement.

Jim you're right. The keywork suggests that this instrument was made after 1955 and the seller's description is correct. Carl Fischer was an importer for Buffet in the 70's but he wasn't the only importer for Buffet for that period. R113 is C. Fisher's designation and has nothing to do with Buffet......V

Wow this clarinet had a 20 year guarantee. That is incredible.

That is an incredible guarantee, MsRoboto. I find it incredible also that the receipt still exists. The receipt may be worth more than the horn :)

http://www.woodwind.org/Databases/Logs/1999/05/000002.txt

This text line from the archive is pithy, but has less than complimentary remarks for the 'Academy Model" designation.

The serial range quoted by Hans Moennig (in the article, without corroboration) is from 39,000 to 41,000 which presumably predates the instrument at auction.

However, the presence of a metal ring on a Buffet tenon does not point to typical R13 assembly.

If the instrument can be purchased cheaply, then the risk maybe worthwhile. If not, there may be better choices available.
