 who loves marcellus?
Author: jon jones

I love the legendary clarinet player Robert Marcellus.
I search cd stores up and down to get George Szell recordings to hear his wonderful, wonderful sound.

Dose anyboady know if Szell recorded cappricio espagnol? I would love to hear Marcellus on the solos.

And his recording of the Mozart is just world changing.

Does anyboady else "bow down" to him?

Please share your thoughts or tell me where I could get info. on him.

thanks

jon

jon...The artistry of Robert Marcellus is discussed frequently on this board by not only admirers but also by some of his former students.

I would suggest to start with a search on this site, as it will bring up lots to read, with a number of references to links, recordings, and published articles...GBK

Capriccio Espanol, yes. But I think not on cd. You'll have to wait.

If you have a Super Audio CD player, you can get a bunch of Szell titles, including some that were never on cd (and some that were barely ever available on lp even).

Szell / Marcellus Capriccio Espagnol was originally released on LP and later on a cassette which I have somewhere in my collection. Not sure about a CD version.

The Szell / Cleveland recordings were on the Epic label, which was a CBS/Columbia label. Sony bought the CBS catalog and has reissued many of the classic recordings of the Cleveland, NY Phil and Philadelphia orchs on CD.

You will want to read the James Gholson interview with Marcellus which is available on an Australian Clarinet website. A web search on Austral! and Marcellus should locate it for you. If not, Anne Bell's pages on this website might have a link to it.

I wore out my copy on record of the Clarinet Concerto. I am happy to say my CD plays beautifully still!
