I recently worked with an oboist who played on an oboe (can't remember the brand) and it was made using "violet" wood. It was a beautiful looking instrument, not black in colour like our African hardwood clarinets. Does anyone know anything about violet wood and from which tree it comes?

thanks

I'm not sure why I know about this, but the oboe was probably a Loree or even a Rigoutat. Violet wood comes from the Brazilian Dalbergia Cearensis (Kingwood) tree.

Thanks Jacy - yes, it was a Rigoutat (sp?).

Here is a website that may help. If you want any information on Australian native woods that can or have been used for instrument making contact me and I can provide more info. This site does not have Australian natives and remember common names as opposed to botannical names can be confusing.
