 Selmer mouthpiece and clarinet length
Author: Bacon

I just went lookin at the other clarinet my sister has (she didn't like mine and wanted a newer one anyway) and I saw that the had switched mouthpieces on me! I remember now that my LeMargue for some reason came with a Selmer mouthpiece, but anyway I wanted to know if this Selmer brand is a good one. I remember all the other clarinetists in my band class all had Selmers, shiny brand new ones, while I had the old ancient LeMarque. I also noticed that her new clarinet is at least 1 1/2 cm longer than mine. Does length of a clarinet make a difference?

Thanks!

The length of a Clarinet is determined primarily by pitch and bore size. I have measured Bb low-pitch (A=440) Clarinets and others built to A=442. Lengths from bottom of bell to top of barrel have varied by as much as 2.7 cm. (A Fontaine/Couesnon Boehm is the shortest Bb Clarinet I've ever measured, whereas an old Boosey and Hawkes Albert-system instrument was by far the longest. I wish I had measured its bore size, which must have been rather huge.) So a half-centimeter difference between Bb Clarinets is no cause for concern at all.

Regards,
John

Sorry, I should have added that bore size can make a difference in the tonal characteristics of a Clarinet, with jazz players usually tending to the larger-bore Clarinets. The larger bore instruments can be expercted to be a bit longer.
