All I can add is that associate principal is usually also the Eb player. Associate auditions include playing Eb.

Whether one plays Eb or not has little, if notthing, to do with the title. It depends on the orchestra, their traditions and their employment agreements.

Traditionally,
In a violin section you have
Concertmaster,
then associate concertmaster,
then assistant concertmaster.
As far as clarinet is concerned I don't know of any orchestra that has the luxury of having 3 principal players. So it depends on the orchestra's tradition: Principal&associate or principal&assistant.
In the end it's the same job.
Cheers,
-Sylvain

Usually this title means you get to suffer through trying to play the Eb clarinet in tune with the cellos and stuff like that!
