I am thinking of buying a Hite mouthpiece and was thinking of the J one but I read that they are only suitable for strength three reeds and was wondering if the D mouthpiece would be more adaptable?
Also I read it would be better to use V12 reeds with these mouthpieces rather than the blue box Vandoren reeds.
Any advice?

About a year ago i was playing on a hite before i went to college. I played on a "D" facing with 4 V-12 reeds. I am not using this setup now, but this combination worked well for me then. Out of all the people i've met that use hites, the majority of them seem to use the "D". Maybe you can send away and try a few of both.

Both are wonderful mouthpieces. The facing on the "J" is more open than the "D", which is why the "J" requires a softer reed.
In my opinion the "D" has a darker, more classical sound to it.
The "J" produces a slightly brighter sound, and is easier to play.
Both produce a tone that is clear and centered, with excellent response and intonation.
Bottom line, if you're looking for a richer sound and/or something that plays with a stronger reed, go with the "D". If you're looking for a versatile, easy to play mouthpiece, go with the "J".
I believe you can order both mouthpieces from one of the internet music stores and they will allow a trial period. Just make sure you have several different strenghts and brands of reeds to try from.
You can't go wrong either way.

David Hite also makes model "M" and model "H", the latter designed for use with "thick blank" reeds.
