after a while i practice, it gets airier and stuff. and when i clean the mouthpiece, then try again, it works fine. would that be because i'm projecting too much saliva into the mouthpiece? --;

and how can i avoid it?
i guess it's too much if it's dripping down through the bell. lol
ahem.. sorry if it was gross but i'm kinda serious.

very little or no saliva should enter your clarinet. Collect it in a space under your tongue, just behind your lower teeth. Then swallow it when able.

What is deposited in the clarinet is condensation of the moisture that is in your breath, as it cools in the clarinet. It comes from your lungs, not your mouth, and is reasonably pure water.

Moisture under the reed can usually be removed by a quick, short suck.

I'm curious about this problem also. I don't have this problem, but some of my really young students do. They have beautiful sounds and tongue really well, but the seem to spit alot. Their reeds are really, really wet and I have to get them to do a lot of clearing of their mouthpiece. What is causing them to spit so much? This sounds gross, but sometimes it even drips down the mouthpiece.
