well my sisters want to learn to play it too; so they want to buy some mouthpieces.

is that a good/bad idea?
one of my sisters already play the piano and wants to play the clarinet and the violin (she's getting a job to buy the violin). and the other one wants to play the flute (actually i don't recall her saying that she wants to play the clarinet).

should i let them or not? i'm not buying anything tho. lol

Well, Nahya, people have varying opinions about this and my opinion is that it's Your clarinet and you can do whatever you wish with it and my clarinet is My clarinet and I never loan it to anyone. Period :|

I think you should be as careful about sharing your clarinet as sharing your thoughts.

I don't share my clarinets; however, I occasionally let others try my clarinets with my supervision...and with their own mouthpieces and reeds. I never loan them or let others use them without my presence.

Nothing wrong with sharing with a sibling if that saves buyuing another instrument - until you find who wants to play what. Sharing a megabuck insgtrument with an unsupervised aquaintance in a risky environment, say a stage band or theatre pit - that is a totally different story.

Since Steuben clarinets claim:

"by German Engineering is made of "hand selected"
composition ebonite of *ONLY* the very best quality." (their words)

What's to worry about?...GBK

"sisters" - ummmmm, does this mean the same thing in American English to Australian English - or have I read WAY to much into nahya's remark ...

Nice GBK. I always like it when people makes others stumble by their own words.

To you Nahya^^, I have been in your shoes. Like ron b said, it's your clarinet, you can do whatever you want with it. Even so, think about it. You would have probably realized that a clarinet is very addictive since the only way you become good at it is to put amazing amounts in time into practicing. Thus you become attached to it. Now imagine if your sibs also become attached to it. Hmmm...

My sister (who also plays piano) was interested in my clarinet too and after I got a better mouthpiece I let her borrow the old one and let her play for awhile on my clarinet. She soon got addicted to it, but I couldn't stand her playing poorly on MY instrument. It took at least a month just to get her off.

I didn't learn my lesson though, gave a unexpected little demo to some family, and let my little cousins try to blow. Unfortunately one little kid got too attached and it took awhile to get some serious practice in as she was messing with my keys.

After that the only person who could play my clarinet was ME.

My family has this rule: before you buy any long-term instruments such as the clarinet, you first must show interest in some other instrument such as a cheap plastic recorder. After you get good at that and show some interest then you can get a clarinet, which is more difficult than it sounds. Don't know if it will work for you but it seems to work here very well.

My advice, for what it's worth, is don't let others play it.

But maybe I'll give an exception to the Steuben clarinets...;)

"....but I couldn't stand her playing poorly on MY instrument..."

Some families are very sharing with all the family's possessions - it is part of being a family. But in other families members get very possessive and almost paranoid about others using their gear. That's family diversity. Do what suits you and your family.

I would be delighted if my kids got addicted to playing clarinet through playing my one, and the poor playing of a beginner does no harm to a clarinet.. Eventually they, or I, would get another for them.

i would let someone living in the same house share whatever I own. Who knows someday you may have a duet. Wouldn't that be nice?

Hi, [Philo] Bob :) :)
My only question to your comment is: how're you gonna play duets, you only got one shared horn? :) : :|
Otherwise, how're things 'up north'? My wife and I were up in Willits area a couple of weekends ago - thought of you :]

ron: after you get your sister hooked--then she buys one and then you play duets. simple.
How about you play every other measure????????

Hahahaha!!! BRAVO!!!! :) shoulda known you already had it figured out, Bob. My sister needs to talk to someone like you.
Actually, last time I visited my sis down Ripon way she told me she sorta wished she'd taken up the clarinet. I still ocassionally offer her one of my fixed up 'project' horns but she insists she's too old now. Maybe I can get her interested in visiting Sneezy :) I think she and I'd have a good time serenading the river rodents and a few happy cows in the evening by the levee :) My wife plays 'cello - how's that for a combo ?

:]
