first of all if you haven't seen this film yet, do so. It was great.
Wait till you hear the clarinet playing!!!!! It is a major part of the film. The solo is one of my favorite numbers by one of my favorite composers.

Mark Isham - he did "A River Runs Through It" No, I never saw it either.
However, the director knows music. He did "The Shawshank Redemption."
The record player and the prison PA system? Has to be one of the all-time greatest moments in cinema.

I'll agree about the music-the clarinetist is Eddie Daniels, and the piano playing by a guy called Jim Cox from LA-thats all the info I have.

Reasons that we have problems with adjectives when we describe clarinet sounds:
1) Acker Bilk = deeper, more liquid tone

Well, I fell for bob's recommendation. Thought the movie was OK, at least no violence. Wonder how Colin knew Eddie was the person actually playing clarinet. Like Acker's original rendition better.

The "big band" part was done by the Spencer Wyatt Big Band (no idea who or what Spencer Wyatt is ... but ...), Eddie Daniels on clarinet & sax, Jim Kanter on clarinet.
From the roster of players in that band it looks like a helluva pickup band!

Unless I'm totally out to lunch (very possible)-wasn't the name of the 'clarinetist' in the movie Spencer? This would make the 'Spencer Wyatt Big Band' a non-entity...probably just 'a helluva pickup band'! I personally thought the movie was ok...but I did reccomend it to the pianist in my band...get some of that boogie feelin'

PS-at the very end of the movie, it lists the players...after hearing some of the playing, I had to wait to the end of the credits to find out!

No idea. I saw the first 5 minutes of the movie and decided to go do something more interesting.

..which is what I should have done too. But I made an even bigger mistake..I bought the dvd. Only partially kidding because it is a feelgood movie and,thus,rather refreshing. If I had younger eyes I could probably read the credits at the end of most movies these days. If you want to listen to some real clarinet/sop sax playing try Sidney Bechet. Any album will do but "Blue Horizon" is about as good as it gets...but it doesn't contain "Summertime".

one of the reasons that I liked the film was:
filmed in our area--Frendall, ca.
2. know a gal that knows the gal who knows the owner of the police car.
3. it may be feel good.
4. liked the music.
so there.
