Hey there group,
It's not often I post questions -- particularly about literature. I'm looking for some encore pieces for my next couple of recitals. Normally, i would simply listen to some recordings and buy lots of music and find something I like. But a slow summer of teaching and not many gigs has reduced my spare money for buying music. And as i didn't make it to ClarFest or the Oklahoma Symposium, I was not able to browse through music like i usually do.
I'm looking for either something humorous, or technically flashy, or a little of both. Preferably under a minute, or two at the most. With or without accompaniment.
I usually plan atleast one piece of chamber music on each recital, so pieces that consist of 2 clarinets or clarinet and violin, or clarinet and flute (also with or without accompaniment) would be happily considered.

flight of the bumblebee - rimsky korsakov
moto perpetuo - paganini (a little longer than a minute, but depending on how fast your fingers are.....;)

This one's been around awhile, so you probably already know it but, just in case, Rutter's "Three American Miniatures" (for flute and clarinet) might fit your bill. In particular, the third movement "Rag" would make a fun, flashy short encore piece. Currently $7.50 in the Luyben Music catalog.

The second of Joseph Horowitz's "2 Majorcan Pieces."
No nonsense. You off the stage and half way through your second Happy Meal by the time the audience realises it's been wowed. Job done.

Reginald Kell transcribed a couple of movements from Handel recorder sonatas and a wonderful little Gigue from a Corelli violin sonata. They're published by International, so they're not too expensive.

Bela Kovacs: Hommage a De Falla is 2'50 and a great encore piece.
It's from a book called "Hommage", 9 etudes, each is a tribute to a composer (Bach, Paganini, Weber, Debussy, de Falla, Strauss, Bartok, Kodaly and Khatschaturian).
They are all great but the de Falla is especially fun to play and hear.
By the way, I think this book should have its place in the curriculum of a college student along side Rose 32...

hey,
Howard Klug and Julian Bliss played a really great duet at the OK symposium. I don't remember what it was called, but it was kind of jazzy. Maybe somebody out there knows what it was.
also try the Buccolique by Bozza, lotsa notes and very intertaining!

"Benny's Gig" by Morton gould. Duet for bass and clarinet, features eight short duets in varying styles--some smooth & cool, some more "up" but all bluesy/jazzy. Play all eight or just a few--your choice, but a real crowd pleaser.

I prefer to keep my encores under 2:30. A couple I've recently used are any of the short mvts from the Templeton, "Pocket-Size Sonatas" #1 and #2, and Finale (mvt III) from the Szalowski Sonatina. v/r

There is a wonderful piece for unaccompanied clarinet by Louis Cahuzac, the late and great French clarinetist, titled, "ARLEQUIN." It has all the qualities that you are looking for and is a real crowd pleaser.
