Anthony Pay Question
Author: David Dow
Date: 2002-08-06 12:09

I have long admired the clarinet playing of Anthony Pay. Recently I heard his version of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto on original Basset Clarinet and was totallly amazed by the fluidity of technique and richness of tone he brought to this performance. I was wondering what his set up is on Modern Clarinet? I heard he plays Buffet clarinets as well. Does he play on a specific facing for the regular clarinet? Sincerely >>DD<<

Search the Klarinet archives (but you'll probably get too much info ..) or write him. His email is in the archives.

I think I read somewhere that he uses a B45, but I could be mistaken. I have also admired him for a long time.

Hmmm. I seem to recall a message to the Klarinet list awhile back where he indicated a preference for an Australian "Triple D," though the embouchure he described was somewhat unorthodox. Perhaps Mark remembers. ;^)

Best regards,

I second Mark's suggestion simply to e-mail him. He's most kind with his replies if he's not on tour. His posts to the KLARINET list over the years have been some of the best. And, by the way, his first name is spelled Antony (no "H").

And he will correct you if you misspell it - I know ;^) (call him Tony - you won't go wrong!)

PS:
Hi Don! Long time no hear.

Bob - I'm seriously NOT anti-Buffet (or Leblanc, Selmer or Yamaha for that matter). I'm just a firm believer in "if it plays for you, you like the feel of it and it makes the sound you want, then buy it - regardless of the brand".

I don't have a lot of time for people who just play on a Selmer (for example) and will not entertain the idea of trying other models. For the record I have owned Selmer, Yamaha and Leblanc, and have played on many Buffet's - I've just not found one (Buffet) that I liked for many reasons. If I do find a Buffet I like and it "works for me" I will then fork out the money and buy it. I'm very interested in their contras - have they produced them yet? I hear they are in the production line.
