 CYSO and the planets!
Author: James

I mentioned in the past about the auditions that take place in city for the chicago youth symphony. There are a lot of really amazing players in chicago, personally many more than the four spots open for cyso. Anyhow I wanted to follow up on the audition process and results. The four people that are in it this year are....

James Garcia*
Carmen Izzo
Jack Marquardt
Rebecca Wolfe*

*Clarinetist selected to be in the encore chamber orchestra.

There have been some really good players that have come from CYSO. Like Julie Deroche, Linda Brannen, Anthony Mcgill, (many other people i forgot the mention) and conductors like Rossen Milinov, Daniel Hege. Anyhow I am looking forward to my senior year and playing with this orchestra! Anyhow here is what we are playing for our fall concert.

Carter Pann - Slolam
Dvorak - Cello concerto
Mozart Clarinet Concerto
Gina Guhl, clarinetist
and..
Holst's planets.

Planets is not an easy piece let me tell you! I know there are three clarinet parts and a bass but does the third part also have Eb clarinet in it too? I was just curious, hope someone could tell me.

We did The Planets in the Queensland Youth Symphony (QYS) in June and the 3rd part has quite a few tricky intonation bits, like at the start of Venus where it has some unison notes with 1st flute and again in Saturn. Unfortunately no it doesn't switch to Eb :(

Oh by the way, reinforce to your trumpet section the importance of the very last note of Jupiter. Our first trumpet split it or played a wrong note or something that clashed REALLY badly, and it just kept ringing and ringing for ever in the concert hall. It was hard not to laugh, but instead there was absolute dead silence. I think people were stunned.
