Hope you can forgive going off-topic.
Whatever happened to the "Great Performances" recordings? Used to be when I wanted a renowned recording of a major work, I'd go right to those. Their newspaper-style covers were easy to spot. That's where I found Marcellus's Mozart recording. My favorites were Wagner's Ring music by the Cleveland Orch. and the Bernstein version of Rhapsody in Blue.
Have they been discontinued and the recordings themselves folded into some new label? I'd like to find Beethoven's 5th and 6th symphonies.

Ralph... There were about 100 recordings in the original "Great Performances" series. The Szell/Marcellus recording of the Mozart Concerto was #73.
Sony eventually repackaged the original "Great Performances" recordings into "Essential Classics" and various other configurations. It is sometimes possible to still find some of the original "Great Performances" recordings (with the newspaper type label) if you are lucky. Check the big retailers, and the on-line stores.
The "Great Performances" recording of Beethoven Symphony #5 (and Schubert Symphony #8) was with Bernstein/NY Philharmonic, and was #6 in the series.
The "Great Performances" recording of Beethoven Symphony #6 was with Bruno Walter/Columbia Symphony, and was #7 in the series.
Both of these original recordings can now be found in other repackaged configurations...GBK

Thanks. You're an officer and a gentleman. Or a gentleman and a something. Whatever that compliment is that says you're a fine human being and not the guy with the gerbils.

Also, if yoiu like vinyl, check your local Salvation Army, Goodwill, or other thrift shops. Most classical recordings have been well-treated and are available for less than a dollar each.

One of my absolute favourite recording series!!
Remember the stunning Beethoven 9 (Ormandy and the Phillies)? Breathtaking. I have seen these reissued onto CD - they were available and I purchased a couple of them.
Call me old fashioned, by the vinyls just had a "better sound" than CD - I don't know why, especially if your stylus was brand new and the vinyl in good shape.

The vinyls can sound great, but beware some of the cd transfers of this series. I find that many of them haven't been digitally remastered, and can consequently sound a little remote and fuzzy. I'm referring to the cd issues with the "newspaper" style covers, not the "Essential Classics" repackaged ones. The Marcellus is available in the Essential Classics lineup. Sony's done a great job with these Essential Classics.
As GBK says, the 2 Beethoven symphonies you mentioned are available in the Essential Classics series. They're pretty well transferred, and sound great!

Mahler 9 Karajan Berlin in 82 Szell Mahler 6 in 67 Cleveland and give the Mussorsky Pictures Karajan a try from 65 and how about the Berg Violin Concerto Szernig Kubelik onDG: and Brahms 4 with Kleiber Vienna--- and then go to Bernstein's concducting of Concerto for Clarinet Copeland with Drucker on DG. The Karajan Beethoven symphonies sound better than Szells in terms of recorded sound from 63 and are less expensive. I do love the szell as well for different reasons...How about the Karajan Pines of Rome from the 70s on DG? Wow!
