Good morning clarinetists!
Summer games is over. Had 13 preformances (after 10 months practise). Mostly did well, a few times failed, playing outdoors in rainy weather. I guess wet humidity makes the reed cut off, and then a couple of notes miss, and then fingerings mixed and play nonsense. That's fun. What do I hobby next winter? Accordion? Do I quit clarinet? I am afraid in clarineting there is something similar to smoking, you may get hooked to it?

why would you want to quit something that you enjoy. Never switch horns in the middle of a rain storm. If you want to add the accordion--great.
stay with the black one.

HUMANITARIAN: Definition--an accordianist who refrains from playing in public.

Seriously, my "lifes" theory is, if it is fun, Do It!! If it stays fun, Keep Doing It. For me, clarineting (and sax/flute) have been a continuing passion that has never diminished--sometimes frustrating, but always rewarding. However, if you feel the need to try something new, than Do It. The possiblities are endless and only limited by your enthusiasum and percerverence. My personal recommendations might be: bass clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, or electric bass. But also remember, if your intent is to gain excellance on any one instrument, you must "stick to it". Constant switching will satisfy curiosity, but breed mediocrity. However, Bottom Line, music shouldalwahys be fun and rewarding. Whatever you decide, always keep that goal in sight and mind and you will "Do It" just fine. Good Luck from a hopelessly addicted clarinetist.

I too have had to play in the rain and it is a challenge. When the pads get soaked and water gets in the tone holes, the clarinet doesn't play well. Its a challenge. I hope you dried and oiled your keys afterward. If you enjoy the clarinet, stay with it. It will bring you musical enjoyment for years to come.

Thank You for advice. Accordion and guitar are my older friends, clarinet is new. I think i have completed "student grade", and need to purchase intermediate-class wooden clarinet. Cost 1000 euros? BTW have you ever seen an invisible clarinet? I did, in Linda Tillery's choir. Amazing!

Pull a pig's tail, he says, "Huh"... twist his tail and he says, "Uh-huh."
