I use black velcro for soprano clarinets, but not for larger ones. I have tried the hook one side, fuzz the other side type and found that it was much bulkier and harder to adjust. I too sew 5 inch strips (give or take) face to face with 3/4 inch of overlap. I wrap the mouthpiece without a reed, then place the reed on and slide the velcro over. This makes the whole affair tighter than if I directly wrap the velcro.
