I am considering getting a new Vandoren mouthpiece and would appreciate some advice regarding whether or not I should get a "13 series" model. I always use A 440 pitch. The 13 series should help with this, but could the same thing not be achieved by using a non-13 mouthpiece and pulling at the barrel? I'm afraid if I get a 13 then when I happen to be playing flat, I might not be able to do anything about it. It seems that an A 442 mouthpiece would give me more leeway when my clarinet is cold, etc.

My experience has been that the 13 series mouthpiece plays quite a bit flatter than than the traditional Vandoren mpcs. When I did use one I had to use a shorter barrel. With the standard 66mm barrel supplied with Buffet clarinets I found it tuned to A440, but only after the instrument warmed up and then there were problems if the overall pitch of the ensemble went sharper. There are many other mouthpieces that tune flatter than the traditional Vandoren. They tend to play sharper than most. I think you will find the tone quality of the 13 to be much different; less bright and warmer. Why don't you order several to try. If you like one you may or may not have to try a shorter barrel.

I do not play Vandorens any more, a story for another day,
but during a full reconditioning of my clarinet,
Mr. Chadash noted that my 5RVLyre88/13 was way flat.
he took one of his custom barrels, not yet completed,
and turned it down in two stages until the Vandoren

I had wondered about these 13 series mouthpieces too; after trying several of them and some different barrels the right combination surfaced (A tuner and dumb luck helped too).
Now I use a V13 on my pre-R-13 Buffet w/ a 65mm Moennig style barrel, this give me some tuning flexibility and has really helped overall intonation; it was a very good match for that horn!
There was no way that I could use that mouthpiece on my Noblet's or new R-13, it was too flat.

Often the flatness is found in the throat register. Check it with a tuner.

I would like to contradict all of you on the 13 series. For me, it put me right where i should be. My throats are no longer very sharp and i rest comfortably around 440/441
