Hi...
Have to get some opinions. Am looking at a Selmer 5 piece metal clarinet on ebay. Have a beautiful SILVER KING, but am considering selling it to get the Selmer. Really the only reason is so I can put the Selmer and my R-13 in the same case. I know. Pretty stupid reasoning. BUT...and it's a big BUT.....I want to know if you have any thoughts on quality between the Selmer and Silver King.
Have to tell you....this Silver King of mine is a great horn. I feel more comfortable with it sometimes than my Buffet.
Any opinions on Selmer metal versus Silver King? Please?!

John, I have looked at that horn a number of times. I cant say how it plays for the obvious reasons. The one draw back that I see to it though is it's a full Boehm, that is if we are talking about the same horn. The C# vent is on the break. I have a Penzel Muller with the same key configuration and it is a very finiky note. You have to line the thing up just right, and make sure the pad opens up enough or else it is flat. That may not bug you though.
There is a Conn up right now as well, it breaks in the middle but I don't think the bell comes off. Good luck either way.

I have both a metal Selmer 5 piece and a Silver-King.
Both are great playing horns. In my opinion, the Silver-King produces a brighter tone and leans toward the Jazz side. The Selmer has a darker tone and leans toward the classical side.
The intonation on my Selmer is a bit better than the Silver-King.
My Silver-King is a bit more free-blowing than the Selmer.

The Selmer reportedly has a more classical sound than the Silver King. Pricewise, the Selmers usually go for major $$ - around 2-3X as much as a Silver King. Ultimately, it depends what you want, but I wouldn't expect the Selmer to out-perform the Silver King for jazz performance.
Since you already own an R13, the Selmer could be a backup for the R13. But with an R13 and a Silver King, you have two distinctly different beasts. Hey . . . why not get both?

Thanks for the equation....I find my Silver King to be a very free blowing "loud" instrument....and very adept for jazz. All leather pads....resonators on the lower four....and just an exceptional clarinet. As I said, I just want a five piece to break down and put in my double case with my R-13. Buffet is first choice...the metal a backup.
Jack....I've read your posts and enjoy the insight. The Selmer I'm
looking at is not a "full boehm". Does have an articulated G# as does my Silver King.
I'm really weighing the difference between the two. As Madvax stated...the Silver King is a good jazz horn. Thaat's what I'm looking for. The Selmer a classical. Then again, I can make my R-13 sound pretty jazzy with the right MPC.
Thanks guys for the input. Any others?

In general the metal Noblets are very good. I prefer the model with the raised diamond on the bell. They play at least as well as some of the plastic student models available today. Defintely one of the better metal clarinets that were produce.
In my opinion, the metal Noblet produces a nice mellow tone, not too dark and not too bright. On all of my Noblet's, the intonation has been good to very good. They are a bit stuffy, but not bad.
Originally the metal Noblet's were targeted as an intermediate model (based on their pricing at the time), but they eventually became Leblanc's low end student model.

I was just checking out that Selmer and relised it wasn't full, so I came to clarify up, you guys are to quick. Seems like a tough one John. I've sold off a bunch of equipment for upgrades and downgrades and all in between....But the nice thing is you'll get your money back and a different Silver King if the Selmer doesn't work out. So you just have to ask yourself how close you are to your horn. This brings up the question of how much varience there is in the Silver King's?

Like madvax, I too have both models. the articulated C#/G# gave me fits to to get adjusted and (coincidence) there is something I don't like about a few notes in that vacinity in the upper register. I have been using a new mpc, and maybe if I tried that it would solve my problems. I think the Selmer has very stable altissimo and I like the low notes fine.
I would never swap a horn I love for one I might like. I also wouldn't pay the buy it now price on that Selmer, and I have paid silly amounts on a lot of metal clarinets.
I had a "diamond" model noblet, and while I thought it layed pretty good, there are a number of types I like better. I do have a later model that appears to be strictly student.

As mentioned I'm just looking for a good metal horn I can consolidate into my double Buffet case for convenience sake. Not a good reason for ridding myself of a great SILVER KING, but....
So....do any of you have a double case that will work for an R-13 and a single body metal? Like maybe a Wiseman for under $100.
Didn't think so.....
