Hi,
I have recently been lucky enough to receive a scholarship to go to the UK for a couple months at the end of the year to have lessons with some of the principal players in orchestra's over there. I was also hoping to, as a side track, hopefully meet the grandfather of the English clarinet, Sir Jack Brymer. Does anyone out there know how I could get in contact with him. Even if all I do is knock on his door, shake his hand and say "Thanks mate, you did some pretty bloody amazing things", that would make me a very happy camper!
Also I was wondering if anyone in London could tell me which one of Hackney or Greenford I should stay in, I have offers in both and I am looking for a safe and secure neighbourhood.

Can't help with the questions but congratulations on the scholarship! We have some of the worlds greatest orchestras in the UK. Who is the scholarship with?

Hackney is only two or three miles from the City (financial district) - convenient for the Barbican concert hall and the Guildhall School of Music.
Greenford is miles out to the west, but has a reasonably good underground railway service which will take you into and across central London.
London is not a dangerous city, but it's fair to say that Hackney is one of the rougher neighbourhoods. On the other hand, getting a taxi home at night to Hackney is likely to be a good deal cheaper than getting one all the way to Greenford.
If you're going to be practising a lot where you're staying, you might want to check for proximity to noisy main roads; both places have them. Try www.streetmap.co.uk or www.multimap.co.uk to check the exact locations.

Judging by your "language" you've got to be an aussie. Congratulations on the scholarship - just remember, England's 'bloody expensive' - especially London. Enjoy yourself, I had a similar experience a few years ago.

Andy,
I hope you have a good visit to England. Don't forget that there are other parts besides London. If you get up to Manchester (only 200 miles) don't hesitate to get in touch. You may learn more about British life here, since London seems full of Aussies anyway.
Jack Brymer is totally blind now after failed cataract operations and living in sheltered accomodation with his disabled wife.
