The BBC promenade concert in the Royal Albert Hall, London on Sunday night is a 'popular' programme including such delights as Rhapsody in Blue and Bolero. Some of the items are Gershwin songs, one of which has been orchestrated to include a section of 5 clarinets including an alto. I was wondering if this may be the first time this instrument has appeared at this series of concerts in the last 100 years or so?
It is being broadcast on BBC radio & television so might be worth trying to catch. If you spot the alto you'll notice an unusual wooden bell and crook which make it look abnormally agricultural.

sadly not. I try to only play instruments I possess myself. It's being played by a friend of mine who owns every clarinet-size in current production.
Bob,the concert's at 1900 BST it'll be live on BBC radio 3 I'm not sure when the tv broadcast is

jez - LOVE your latest CD (BBC Phil on BBC Music Mag). Isn't the Golden Spinning Wheel just a nock out of a piece. It is sadly neglected in the concert hall (along side it's four brothers).
