I was recently told that it is not a good idea to share an instrument between two people. (I don't mean the mouthpiece). The young man who told me this said that it ruins the tuning or somehow makes it worse to play if two different people are using the same instrument. Is there any truth to this?

If you aren't sharing a mouthpiece or reed and the other person is careful not to damage the instrument, I don't see what effect there could be.

I think this is an old wives tale.
The only problem I see is that you will never be able to play togeather. Bummer

That's very interesting. I've heard the same said about sharing spouses and toothbrushes.

3 things one never lends out:
1. Your wife
2. Your car
3. Your clarinet
Not necessarily in that order...GBK

About the only arising-problem I can think of, would be if one or the other took it upon him/her self to adjust rings, keys and pad "rises" [clearances] to their liking. I would prob. have that inclination, if there were interference in my playing, but would "leave it alone"!, unless it was approved. A fine sax player-repairer told me a story about his brother [also talented] bending a borrowed bari sax's keys to "fit his hands"!!, and the trouble it caused! Be careful, Don

A sax player friend once lent me a metal mouthpiece to try. Before playing on it, and again before returning it, I carefully washed the mouthpiece (just to be hygenically safe). Later, he accussed me of "ruining" his mpc. And his reasoning--he had never cleaned it and when I did, I removed years of built-up "whatever" and thereby altered the dimesions of the chamber and its tone quality. True story I thought you might find amuseing.

LOL - ok, I'm not going to try to get this kid to share his clarinet!! I don't think there is any of the issues he was thinking of, but I can see some others....
What I wanted was to get to use it (and believe me, I wouldn't be changing any keys, etc - so i can go back to playing and be in a small community orchestra. I'm just going to BUY one!
Thanks for the answers though!!
Pat

Hahahaha, Bob. As long as you're yourself, beside yourself is okay
I'd like to share with all BBers a note of advice, hastily scribbled and urgently passed down to me from the 'old geezers and goats' department decades ago re: "sharing your instrument".
It reads simply:
DON'T
