Album pictures show him holding an R-13. No idea what mouthpiece he plays.
He's a remarkable player. Difficulties simply don't exist for him. I have several LPs of him doing complex modern music that everybody struggles on, but he makes it sound easy. Combined with his wonderful tone and musicality, he's maybe my favorite player.
It's not easy to find information about him on the net, since there was a well-known politician with the same name. A Google search on "Bela Kovacs" (in quotes) and "clarinet" (not in quotes) pulls up the resumes of a lot of his pupils, who might be able to give you more information. You can also search on his name on this board and on the Klarinet archives.

Thanks for that Ken. His tone sounds nothing like the R13's that i have heard. I agree, beautifull playing.

I would hazard to guess (knowing players from eastern europe personally ) that this set up is probably a B40 or a vandoren piece
for sure.

Are you folk's sure that he IS playing a Bb clarinet? Buffet make a Clarinet in "G" which, I understand, is used frequently for Eastern European music, particularly Turkish and Greek. Bob A

As for the clarinet I would not hazard to guess the model or pitch...although if Mr. Kovacs is playing Mozart or standard A music, it would be pretty tough to play on a G instrument. Josef Balough would be another hungarian who might be easier to find on the net and may have answers to the above query. MB>>>> PS> Also maybe contact the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest through the net search by country. Then make your enquiries from there. You may not be surprised but there should be someone there who speaks English for all phone ticket sales and may help if you are desirous to find Mr. Kovacs. I own a recording of his Mozart on Hungarton records and agree he has excellent technique and musicality as well.
