For those of you who play on Vandoren M15 mouthpieces, which reeds do you use? I know a lady who plays on one and uses 4 Blackmasters and insists that they are perfect for it. She gets an gorgeous, dark sound, but the reeds are a little too strong for my taste. I'm interested in trying an M15, but I have no clue what reeds work well on them.

I use V12 4. You can try 3 1/2 but that's really a bit soft.

ChattyClar... Quite honestly, the strength reed that Ricardo Morales uses, I use, or even Mark Charette uses should make no difference, or have any bearing on what will work for you.
As a starter, checker the Vandoren site for their recommendations. Remember, those are strictly their "recommendations".
http://www.vandoren.com/Product/products.htm
You will see that for the M-15 they suggest using Traditional reeds between strength 3.5 - 5, aand V-12 reeds between strength 4 - 5.
Let's not sound too helpless in finding a reed strength. Try one, if it doesn't permit you to do everything you want - adjust stronger or softer.
This ain't rocket science...GBK

At the risk of muddying up GBK's excellent summary above --
Optimum response on a mpce such as an M15 requires a rather strong reed, not because I say so but because it has a LONG lay -- about 1", whereas most of the traditional Vandoren mpces such as the 5RV or B45 are ~ 3/4" length of lay, and therefore take a softer reed than does the M15 for optimum response.

GBK advises: "This ain't rocket science."
To the contrary, with the exception of detail design work, it sure sounds like it to me.

As a private instructor, I have had tried several reed combinations with my students using the M15 (9 students ranging from 7th grade to 12th grade). Without exception, the Vandoren V12 #4 has been the best fit; however, it's still an individual thing as to what works best for you! Good luck.
