My schools head of music who conducts the local symphony orchestra has asked offered me the chance to play a concerto with the orchestra. Well, he doesn't want me to do a whole concerto, more like a smaller scale piece, something like weber's concertino. Can anyone think of anything kind of more interesting for me to do - the concertino's nice but it's the kind of thing everyone one does....is there anything really modern I can do?

Debussy Premiere Rhapsodie (not really modern but not Weber either)
Copland Concerto (for clarinet and string orchestra- not for the faint-hearted clarinetist or orchestra)
Artie Shaw Concerto (also hard- definitely not the kind of thing everyone does)
Finzi Concerto (clar and string orchestra- very pretty slow movement)
If you want something showy there's always the variations by Rossini, Cahuzac et. al. They're cheesey but fun.
In my attempts to play something modern in a concerto competition, I've found that the orchestral parts for many modern pieces are either hard to get, rental only or VERY expensive. Both the Copland and the Finzi were beyond the means of the competition I entered. I ended up with...the Concertino.
Also remember that just because you've heard the Concertino a million times doesn't mean your audience necessarily has. It isn't frequently programmed in orchestra concerts and is still a very effective piece. Unless someone in your town played it last week, I wouldn't count on most people knowing it.

The Stamiz concerti are seldom performed and only require a small string orchestra (I think with a couple of horns and oboes, too). They are challenging for the clarinet and musically excellent.

possibly you could just do a movement from a full concerto. This certainly gives you more choices

Rossini's Introduction, Theme & Variations
Danzi's Variations on "La Ci Darem" (of Mozart's Don Giovanni)
Finzi's Bagateles (the orchestred version is very good)
Donizetti's Concertino
Lutoslawsky's Dance Preludes
Corigliano's Concerto
