 Meaningless discussions

I am tired of the meandering meaningless stuff put on this site, and think this turns alot of of well meaning advice from people trying to help, into a session of garbage. Share my feelings ????

zorro - yours is a strong sentiment. Perhaps it might have been worded a little more tactfully (heaven forbid, I'm one of the most tactful people you'll ever read on this illustrious BB - tongue firmly in cheek). I think a lot of "generic" sounding questions are asked by newbies and new clarinetists with seemingly monotonous regularity. Just remember, at one time were were all babes in the woods.

Tactfull and tastefull.... what's the problem? I have (and sure will in the future) received very valuable advice from my friends on the this site. AND... some very valuable laughs.

So... no, "Zorro"... I do not share your feelings. Especially when you post a message that, according to your theory, IS the very thing you criticize.

You have a point. A lot of the material here does meander around, but on the other hand many contributors here put a lot of thought and wisdom into what they write, and I am very grateful to them. While learning to avoid interminable debates about ligatures, I've learned a huge number of things from this site about the instrument and about music in general that I couldn't get from my teacher or, very easily, from books. So leben und lass leben. You just have to learn how to discriminate.

What exactly is this "stuff" you talk about? There is a lot of information on this site apart from the board - like tons of articles.

People bored by the " meandering meaningless stuff" on this site have the solution in their own hands - get off it. Without being rude to the people who enjoy the site and find it useful. Karel.

The more discussions the better. What is meaningless to one person may be exactly what another person has been looking for. It only takes a few seconds of perusing to decide which ones are meaningful to you.

There are going to be a lot of repeats, as new people find the site, but hidden in amongst the routine posts are going to be some gems that
bring up info that is useful to many.

If any of us gets a little useful info, or a little entertainment, or a sense of having helped someone once in a while, then the site is serving its purpose.(Yes, I even read this thread.)

zorro --

Since you weren't very specific in your complaint, I'm guessing that what you're referring to is this:

Someone asks a question (for example, What's a good reed?). The first three answers to the question are humorous in nature. The next four or five answers are serious attempts to provide information to the poster. A couple more people just name a brand of reed they say is "the best." Then someone veers off the topic somewhat and starts a discussion about whether a certain brand of reed has changed recently, which leads to a discussion of mouthpieces. Finally, the thread peters out as all the interested parties have had their say.

Now, out of all the posts to that thread, there were about 4 or 5 that were "useful" and directly related to the original question. I suppose the rest could be considered "meandering meaningless stuff" -- chaff, as opposed to wheat -- but it does seem to be the way people respond to this BB.

Is it the most efficient way to get information? Probably not. However, I've found information here that I wouldn't even know where to look for elsewhere. I've benefited from the wisdom of several leading players/artists/craftsmen who are highly experienced and could, if they so desired, charge a pretty penny for their knowledge and advice -- if you could even reach them. I've also learned a lot from "newbies," returnees, and a few cranky old guys who frequent this site. Sure there's chaff, but occasionally there's nourishment even in that. And sometimes the meandering moves the discussion stream into new, productive channels.

If nothing else, I think frequenting this site leads to an awareness (and I hope a tolerance/acceptance) of others' ways of thinking, doing things, and expressing themselves. So, for me, there's very little "garbage" on this site. But, then, I'm a "glass half full" type guy.

Are we getting a lot of complaints on the BB about the BB lately, or is it just me?

I am sorry if some people feel they are so much better than people like me that need the extra advise on things that other understand so well. This site has taughtme more than I could have ever thought. I thank then people that help me and others! And for thoughs that think they do not need to read the "meaningless stuff" that people like me ask then do not read it, and if you think you are so great why are hou here?

I am SORRY if I am out of line, but why should anybody be more inportain then someone else just because they had a chance to learn the information before others!

Meanimgless discussion is what the internet is about. Personally I like a little digression. It opens things up and throws in new ideas and the odd useless fact which always comes in useful some day.

Really, can you imagine how dull it would be if it was "Clarinet stuff only", a question posed and a single answer given?

I always thought that, although he was more convincing in "Lost in Space", Guy Williams was the best Zorro, even though he wasn't that Spanish looking.

And have you noticed this thread is livelier than most?

Well put, Todd and Sara, your comments DO make us think carefully about what we say and how we say it. As an old Boy Scout joke punch line says, "Patience, Jackass, Patience". It applies to me, "a grumpy, old man", [both terms apply], and others, to avoid sarcasm and "down-talking" when answering well-posed questions with "Search", and not going off into technicalities which we ourselves may not comprehend. A GREAT teacher is humble, recognizing that on some subjects, someone always does know more!! I try to remember that!! More thots later, Don

GBK --
The COG's know who they are. :+)) At least you're cranky for a good reason. What are the Vandoren people thinking? "We've got the most popular reed on the planet -- let's change it!" Shades of New Coke.

David --
All right! Now we're rolling on the good meaningless stuff! I agree Guy Williams was good as Zorro, but oh, those story lines! For me the best Zorro was Tyrone Power in the 1940 movie, "Mark of Zorro." He seemed to be having so much fun playing the foppish (perhaps read gay?) Don Diego, and he had the great Basil Rathbone as his nemesis.

David Peagel --
I agree with Tom, too. :+))

Thanks for brightening my Monday, everyone. Good clarineting (and other stuff),

Todd W

Take my advice Zorro.
Never ever give constructive critisism, or suggest that some part of the BB isn't the best thing you have ever seen or used, around this place.

Trust me you are asking for trouble.

Yeeeeesssss - speaking of oiling the bore GBK - were you referring to a particular person possibly [note the clever aliteration!] or to that which is done to a clarinet? A friend of mine says it gradually wears the wood away actually and, I mention this because I don't want to be seen to be just writing nonsense in getting involved in this discussion.

Having now posted this piece of rubbish and one other earlier, I feel that I have well and truly contributed "my bit" to this conversation.

I don't want to deter others of course - please continue if you must - perhaps we can go for the Guinness Book of Records! Good on you Brendan asking for replies to your post. This means another 38 posts of complete bollocks in reply no doubt.
