As mentioned earlier, our Tulsa Comm. Band, in several recent concerts, has sung [not too well], the words that John Phillip Sousa wrote into the S & S, as "unearthed" by our Lady-Marine-Band flutist. These are for the Trio [noted as "Chorus"] " Hur - rah for the flag of the free ---, May it wave as our standard for-ev-er, the gem of the land and the sea,--- The Banner of the right--, Let des-pots re-mem-ber the day----. When our fa-thers with might-y en-deav-or, Pro-claim'd as they march'd to the fray---- That by their might, and by their right, It waves for-ev-er!" There are words also for the preceeding 32?? bars, perhaps more, but are incomplete on my copy. What I have is "But the flag of the North and South and West Is the flag of flags, The flag of Freedom's na - -tion." No question about patriotism!! Don

Does anyone else remember these words to the trio from the Mitch Miller TV show about 40 years ago???
(After this time I'm probably paraphrasing!)
Be kind to your web footed friends,
For a duck may be somebody's mother.
Be kind to your friends in the swamp,
where the weather is very very damp.
(Mispronounce "damp" to rhyme with "swamp")
Now you may think that this is the end,
Well it is! (shouted)

Jim E... does anyone remember? After playing in band in high school, college, the navy and 20 plus years of community band I don't know how may times I've played the Stars and Stripes.... but every time, thanks to that stupid tv show, the words "a duck maybe somebody's mother" jumps into my head while playing... in fact we just played it on the 4th of July with vocals but my mind again provided the duck words. There, I've told you much more than you want to know.

Many TKS, GBK, VUNDERBAHR for both the fine history-complete words AND our well-known "Duck" rendition [somewhat better known] !! I should have made a search, right? Is there an "official" service-band performance available here? the keyboard version is a bit too simple for me!! Don

My high school fight song was sung to the trio of Stars & Stripes. Fortunately, I never had to sing it, since I was in the band and played it, but it was a remarkably gentle tune for a fight song, and the words were sappy even by high school standards. (The school colors were maroon and white):
Now forward we go to the fight,
While proud waves our banner above us,
For purity gleams from its white,
While maroon stands for power and love.
Impossible to forget, no matter how hard you try.
