 Broken Yamaha, advice please!
Author: Lisa

Hi there,

I recently bought a YCL20 off Ebay. (I know, you can shoot me now).

Most of the pads are knackered, some of them missing and the ones that are still there look like a mouse has been nibbling them. Consequently it will only play one note (open G). Attempts to play any other notes just result in what sounds like a very out of tune open G. Is this symptomatic of the wrecked pads, or could there be anything else going on? I can't see any springs off or anything.

Apart from the pads it looks in fairly good condition, and I'm trying to decide whether repadding it would solve the problem, so any advice you could offer would be great.

Lisa

ps - apologies for the double post - thought the stop button would kill it and it didn't - administrators, if you could remove the first one that would be great!

I was first afraid you meant it was really "broken", not just needing [prob.] complete repadding. Likely the higher-up-on-the-upper-joint pads are bad, which might make even open G hard to get!! Luck, Don

Sounds like your clarinet has/had moths in its pads. If everything else feels ok mechanically, a pad job will probably fix it. But you also need to clean your case thoroughly to make sure there aren't any moth eggs left in the fabric. Otherwise, the problem will repeat itself. Around here (St. Louis) the cost of having a new set of pads installed would run around $100. To clean the case you might try dusting it with baking soda, vacuuming it thoroughly and then setting it out (open) in the sun for several hours. If you search the Klarinet Archives on this site for "moth" without the quotes, you should get some useful advice on cleaning the case. Your repair tech may also be able to help you out. PLEASE don't spray the case with poison though.

Best regards,
jnk

Great, thanks both for your advice. I was curious as to whether there was anything else drastically wrong. Everything seems OK mechanically, apart from one tiny new bit of cork needed on the middle register left hand C fingering.

Sadly here in the UK a complete repad will set me back around £140 GBP - so it may as well be "really" broken - my only option really is to try and repad the thing myself. I've done it before but not for a long time, so it could be interesting!

Thanks,

Lisa

Hi, Lisa :)

Moths and mites, are number one on my hit list - total eradication would not cause me any sleep loss, I guarantee. After they've done their dirty work all you can do is pick up the pieces, make a clean sweep and carry on. There's another post nearby about doing the repadding yourself. You may wish to consider that option, it's not out of the question. (Considering 140 GBP I would).
Brokens horns, by the way, are no reason to 'shoot' someone. Even if you did buy it on eBay :] I'm sure we all have a story or two.

Pads are a start. Especially on older instruments, a great many other things can stop it working. Pivots binding slightly from rust or gunk or bends, throat A flat spring binding from too much friction or poor set-up, insecure posts, & sloppy pivots to mention a few.
