 Breaking in a new instrument
Author: Aussie Nick

I just replaced my old RC A clarinet with a new Festival to match my Bb and I don't want to play it too much all the time. Could someone tell me what is recommended (by Buffet?) when breaking in a new instrument?

Here are some good guidelines to follow:

Play for a couple of 10 minute stretches for the first few days. Then a couple of 20 minute stretches for the next few days and then an hour or so for the next few days after. I would suggest oiling the bore a little before starting and keep the tenons free of water and covered in cork grease to seal the end of the wood. Get the instrument stripped and serviced after about 6 months. Oil with or as close to the change of season as possible to develop a pattern.
