With the recent talk about the tip change (flatter) of the Vandoren V-12 reed (specifically the 3½) I thought I would try them and compare the difference to the old style.
(I have played the V-12 3½ as my primary reed for many, many years, with the Gonzalez FOF (recently) as a very formidable alternative.)
I must now say that until Vandoren reshapes the tip back to way it previously was, I will no longer be using the newer V-12 3½, as this new change to a "flatter" tip shape is totally unsatisfactory.
Even with my reed adjusting skills (which I consider quite good) these are very difficult to work with, and now require a different balancing than before.
How has everyone else fared with the newer V-12's?
Does anyone know if this new "flatter" tip is only on the V-12 3½, or on all V-12's?
Thankfully, I still have a very large cache of the "older" V-12's, and a good supply of Gonzalez FOF's...GBK

Ah yes, the flat ones. ..
In recent times i have noticed them as well. I noticed that they still can produce a good sound, but I think the life expectancy of most of them has been decreased along with this tip flattening. The tips have been flat for some time now, but I have been succeeding in the High School Clarinet World, so. . . I'm going to stick wit them.

How long has this been going on? I also use the v12 3 1/2.
I've not had to buy any reeds over the past year because I had
so many on me. I don't remember them advertising this change.
Are they not going to continue with the older style?

May I just say. I really hate those flat tip reeds. I mentioned this back many months ago and a lot of people didn't know what i was talking about then. The difference is that you can get a great sound right out of the box, but they last for not very long. The sound will thin out really fast and articulation is sluggish. Sometimes i get lucky and find an old box and cherish them. I was at a local music store and found non flat tips and i bought 10 boxes.
I really want to try these gonzales reeds. Where are they avalable at? Has anyone tried the rico evolution? Legere?

I tried the evolution and to be honest i didn't like them! I still play with Grand Concert Thick Cut (blue box i think!)

doesn't the flat tip match the vandoren mouthpiece tip? Maybe that's why? no clue.

Eureka!!! Doing a little bragging here, but I don't do that very often. I just found a stash of the old VanDoren reeds that I put away and forgot about. You know, the ones in the skinny purple box with the gold label. Four unopened boxes of them along with a few boxes of Tenor and Bari Sax!!!! Saved me from having to order reeds. I guess they've been stashed away for more than 10 years. The first one I pulled out played great! (No this is not a sales pitch either, I'm keeping these!)
