 Ab sopranino clarinet
Author: Doug Ramsdell

Ever since I read an earlier posting on repertoire (if any) for the Ab sopranino, I've been trying to find this website--it belongs to one of the first-call LA reed players, Marty Krystal (if it has a reed, he's a whiz at it) and it has pix & discussion about his Ab sopranino (and how film composer Michael Kamen heard Marty had one, and went & wrote a diabolically difficult lick for him to play on the Ab in the scoring sessions for "101 Dalmatians").
Well, I found it: www.k2b2.com.martyinstr.html (or just go to the www.k2b2.com website & click on Marty Krystal). It's fun reading, so enjoy.
Also, I want to recommend a fascinating article on the "Top 10 Woodwind Doublers in Los Angeles" in Windplayer magazine, issue # 62 (available as a back issue, hopefully). Anybody on this board who's a gearhead (and aren't we all?) would get a kick out of the players' instrument & mouthpiece preferences.

happy woodwinding, all!
Doug

Yes, he sounds like a very prolific player. I imagine, that players with that range of both classical and jazz expertise are concentrated in LA and New York?

Interesting, so Michael Kamen has written for Ab sopranino before??

Here is the direct link:

The story about the BBb ContraBass is also amusing.

Now that is one heck of a CUTE little beast - but my fingers would not work on it - way to big.
