Hey. Well as you all know. I just purchased a New R-13 Silver Plated Keys from IMS. And you also know I had the upper joint and the barrel stuck. Anyhow. My old R13 I got in sixth grade (i know thats a crazy age to pick out an R13). Well the clarinet is just aweful. It's improved somewhat with a different barrel but its still very un even and stuffy on certain notes. I was told maybe I should get it reamed. Do you think this would make an improvement? I have had the clarinet for five years and have played it in all sorts of conditions (i should have not played it so much outside like i had in Jr. High) I would like it to be a nice back up clarinet. Does anyone know who would do this in Chicago? I know brannen's wont so anyone else?

James,
I would have a repair technician look at your older R-13 first. There probably is some mechanical problem(s) if just certain notes sound stuffy. Perhaps keys aren't vented properly or perhaps there are some pads leaking. As you stated it is "improved somewhat with a different barrel". That doesn't sound all that encouraging to me.

After a good overhaul it is very rare for a clarinet to have stuffy notes.
Let me guess; they are probably thraot Bb, side Eb/Bb, C3/G#, alt b/F3, and maybe F#, A/D & C/G. It is to do with pads, venting, and tone hole condition.

a goodmouthpiece and reed can make all the difference. Have the horn checked out very carefully before doing anything to it. R13's are usually fine instruments- lms
