Any suggestions on the trills in Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio Espagnol. I'm having trouble with them and any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hmmf.... I hope i can explain this well enough over in words. Here is how us chicago clarinetist play them.. (we copy larry combs). The first set of trills that E-F, D-E, G-A, A-B are all double. The next one with is the G-A, then F-G are just one. Like Triplet sixteens (FGF).

When you go on to the next strain. The G-A, A-B, should be double trilled, then the last part should be the same as the ending of the first strain with single trills. Hopes this helps. You should get larry's CD too, it's helped me a lot.

The approach hammered in my head is to play all solo passages with a heightened character, soloistic, connected, precisely articulated and most importantly with solid air support. On A, in the 1st passage, I think 8th notes under the accompaniment, or subdivide to more accurately attack/articulate the trills, DAA--DOT--DOT--DAA--DOT--DOT--DAA--and so on. This also better sets-up the 2nd passage of trills slurred into the 1st of the 2 16ths. I like to interpret this grouping as double trills (5-note trills) which more evenly connects the slur. When swapping on Bb, I ensure the 32-notes are tongued crisply and on the 2nd half of the beat. Be animated, flamboyant, playful, have fun with it and pray the conductor doesn't take it too quick! v/r

Get Larry Combs's orchestral excerpts CD- you can hear the solo without the orchestra getting in the way. I recently bought it for some other excerpts and it has been very helpful. The commentary is brief but hearing the excerpts solo is worth the price.

Play the trills as short as possible and with alot of air, also be sure to put a good space between the sixteenth and eigths and this may go a long way to help. I certainly think it helps to hammer the trills
