What is everyone's favorite patriotic son ? Even if you are not in the USA, feel free to answer from your country's viewpoint since we all live on the same planet.

My favorite to play and listen to is God bless America or You're a grand old flag.

Stars and Stripes. There's nothing better than a bold Sousa march. I also love the trio (as so many pic players!).

"The Stars and Stripes Forever" J P Sousa (USA's official National march)

When our community band went to Rome, Italy--summer, 1994--and played this march for a Wednesday morning Papal audience in the Vatican, it was truely remarkable experiance (and moment of patriotic pride) to hear 10,000 people of international origin clapping along during the trio. Afterwards, cheers of "bono, bono were heard all around. I even think I saw the Popes head nodding a bit--or maybe he was just snoozing. In any case, it was a performance I shall never forget and a march that is recognized world-wide.

Now, segue, if you will, to a mental picture of those firemen holding up our flag at the World Trade Center.............

Very well said, JB and Wm, like Brymer said of the Mozart Concerto "Simply the best" !! We have in our Tulsa Comm. Band, a eldery WOMAN Marine, fl. & pic., who delved into the Sousa Archives to find the !WORDS! he wrote to be sung in the trio. So lately most of us [rhythm needed] have been singing it the first time, pics, second and full band FFF last. Sure gets the clapping-applause. Don

Stars and Stripes Forever, as well as most of the other Sousa marches really get the blood pumping and inspire patriotism.

Along a different line the Sibelius tone poem "Finlandia" will bring a tear to the eye of most Finns. It's a different deeper more introspective type of patriotism partially inspired by the prolonged wars between Finland and Russia. (David and Goliath).

For me hands down, Stars and Stripes. Undoubtedly the proudist and most stirring experience I've ever had the privledge was marching in the 1992 WII Peace Victory parade in Moscow, Russia. Marching side-by-side with over 50 attending Congressional Medal of Honor recipients the 5 mile parade winded through the city culminating in Red Square. The band made a right face before the Kremlin and Lenin's tomb then gloriously belted-out "America's National March" as it resounded off the Kremlin walls. And most gratifying, right in the faces of 10,000 Russian citizens and reviewing party of Boris Yelstin, 30 KGB officials, bureau members and Red Army Generals. It gave me shivers down to the tips of my toes and indescribable pride in the land I love and have fought to defend.

God Bless one and all and God Bless America on this Independence Day!

Battle Hymn of the Republic, Wilhousky arangement Great descant, and a wonderful 4 part male section. (I'm a singer, too.) It was done by the Boston Pops on TV tonight.

#2 is America the Beautiful, I like the Carmen Dragon arangement - I've both sung and played it in concert band. I also like a choral arangement "From Sea to Shining Sea." (I forget who aranged that one.)

"Chester"

I think it was also the first song published in the US, sometime during the revolution.

I also like "God Save the Queen"

The "Stars and Stripes Forever" is always great. I played it two times today, at the Reagan Library and the Hansen Dam Show. It was said that Leonard Bernstein said that he would have traded 10 years of his composing life to have written such a piece. Good Luck.

I have my own list:

1. "American Salute" (Morton Gould?)
2. Carmen Dragon's "America the Beutiful"
3. "Stars and Stripes"
4. "National Emblem"

I also like "Finlandia", though I'm not Scandinavian in any manner.

As for "God Save the Queen," I really love the version by the Sex Pistols. Too bad they didn't get it together for the Queen's Jubilee this time. Great footage of the original in the Filth & Fury movie.

Stars and Stripes Forever!! The best American patriotic song. Maybe the best march ever written.

I was disturbed in the aftermath of 9/11 that people were treating "God Bless America" as our national anthem. In my opinion, it's a piece of sentimental drivel. I also never understood the objection to the Star Spangled Banner. Did you ever notice that the high note is on the word, "free?" Freedom should be piercing.

"This Land is Your Land" is one of the most famous protest songs ever written (Thank you Woody Guthrie!); however, it's been "sanitized" by leaving out verses 5 & 6 most of the time - which leaves out the "protest" part:

"In the squares of the city by the shadow of the steeple
Near the relief office I saw my people
And some were stumbling and some were wondering if
This land was made for you and me."

This land is ...

As I went rumbling that dusty highway
I saw a sign that said private property
But on the other side it didn't say nothing
This land was made for you and me.

This land is ..."

Woody was for communal ownership of the land ... which may or may not be a good thing (please keep the discussion off-list if you want to discuss it).

Hey all!

I'm a little slow to post on this thread but I agree with the above posts about "Stars & Stripes." However, in another vein I had the opportunity to play Copeland's "Lincoln Portraits" and I will forever add that piece to the list of great patriotic songs. Have a fabulous weekend!

David, I'm certain you meant Samuel Augustus Ward's "America the Beautiful" and the Dragon concert band arrangement. Dragon's rendition has become so readily identifiable with the song it's easy to interchange the two. Definitely a band classic, I'd bet a copy is sitting in 99% of U.S. high school, college and military band's music folders since it was published in the 1950s. I recall my band recorded it a few years back, we got in touch with Daryl Dragon, (son) for permission to record it. When speaking with him he was quite touched and surprised of the popularity and sale of it over the years. Even more, very gratified the band industry still held his Father's music in high esteem. We took the opportunity to share with him not only what a magnificent/timeless arrangement it is but also a band "national treasure" within itself. v/r

Many won't agree but:
"The Last Post" and "Taps" as a constant reminder that our personal freedom was purchased in part by many fallen friends, on both sides of the Atlantic.

I absolutely adore Carmen Dragon's America the Beautiful, we did an arrangement with narration, a poem written after the 11th and it was amazing. Coming in a close second would probably be Bagley's "National Emblem"

To Steve E - Yes, I know those words also, but only 16 or so bars long, aren't they? thats all I know!! J P Sousa's words are somewhat more patriotic! When we rehearse again, I'll bring home the copy and post at least some, they are a bit dated for now tho. Don

Jerusalem.

I'm not sure whether our American friends are familiar with this piece - it's the unofficial English (as opposed to UK/British) national anthem.

I hate it when political correctness santizes Guthrie's This Land is Your Land. I also like Battle Hymn of the Republic but it's not in vogue..... or popular anymore for that matter.... the Aussie Tie Me Kangaroo Down is good fun too....
