 Mouthpiece Q's!
Author: Courtney
Date:   1999-02-07 05:10

I am looking to improve my tone. What is the very best mouthpiece I can pair up with a Buffet R-13 for a great sound? I'd also appreciate ligature suggestions.

Thanks a lot,

Courtney

I play on a buffet festival but have found that the greg smith 1+ mouthpiece that i have really is perfact for me. It works great with my setup. However i have found that i have to use the 650 (shorter) barrel to get it in tune all the time. You should really check out his stuff. But these mouthpieces also depend on what reeds that you use. Hope that i could help.

Keep Swinging,
Benny

in my case I use a Mitchell Lurie mouthpiece and also a Vandoren b-45. A friend of mine uses a Portnoy. another one uses a Pyne .It is very personal like a pair of glasses and I suggest you go to a dealer and try what they have until you are satisfied with your tone and ease of playing. Charles

Courtney, mouthpieces are *very* individual. What works as the "perfect" setup for one persone may be completely wrong for another person. The reason for this is the individuality in embouchures, oral cavity shapes, and even dental structures. There's no way around just trying a whole lot of them in order to find the one that works best for you. Having said that, I'll tell you what I use on my R-13: stock Vandoren 5RVLyre-13 with a modified Bonade inverted ligature and Vandoren V12 #4 or 4.5 reeds. That works *for me* right now. I occasionally try different mouthpieces and ligatures and someday I may find a setup I like better. (BTW - the modification to the ligature is one that a lot of people make - the center section between the bands has been cut out).

If I might make some suggestions on how to start looking for a mouthpiece/ligature:
1) When you go to a store to try out a bunch, take a tuner and a bunch of *different strength* reeds. Each mpc will have a unique affect on your tuning and each will require a slightly different reed (depending on tip opening and length of lay).
2) try a few different models within a manufacturers line. e.g. when trying Vandoren, try M13, 5RV, 5RVLyre, B45, etc.
Look at the manufactures charts to see how they compare in physical dimensions and use that as a basis for determining what qualities you like.
3) Once you think you have found what model you like, try a few of the *same model*. Slight differences will exist due to manufacturing inconsistencies.
4) Once you've found *the* mouthpiece for you, try some different ligatures. Ligatures can have a big effect on the tone and response of your instrument. When I try out ligs I use ad "ideal" read (or as close as I can get) and a couple of reeds that are not quite ideal then I compare how the ligature acts on each reed and the overall sound. Sometimes a good ligature can make troublesome reeds more tolerable.

Happy hunting :)

Which model of Mitchell Lurie you use?
how is everything compare to Vandorens?
is the tip opening close or medium?
thanks

I have used both the Vandoran B45 and 5RVlyre mouthpieces on my buffet RC. I like the 5RVlyre better but that is just my preference. I believe Vandoran have a 13 extension on their mouthpieces that have been designed for the R-13 clarinet (I think) so you may want to give these a go. Good luck searching!

I am planning to switch from a Vandoren 5 RV Lyre to a Fobes San Francisco 2m. Does anybody know any of the major differences are far as sound quality, ease of artic., etc. are between these two mouthpieces?

Ah - probably stupid question here, but why are you switching if you can't answer that question yourself? You need to try the Fobes first, and then decide if you want to buy it. Clark makes good mouthpieces, but I don't think you'd want to buy it without trying it out first.

Every clarinet teacher may say 'it is personal'.But in their youth, they all seeked this choice.I guess Kevin and Mark also did!
1)Kasper-cicero #13 mouthpiece(very long tapered)
2)Bonard inverted ligature
3)MORRE reeds(invented by Robert Marcelus of Cleveland Phil) not available now.Its profile resembles that of V12 of Vandoren.
4)Moennig barrel. This barrel has reverse taper and invented with late legendary Ralph McLane.
5)Buffet customized by Moennig.
But if you like bright tonality like Michell Alignon, this dark tonality set is a totally wrong choice.

Other simple nucks I recommend.
1)The register key elevation. It should be less than 1-1.5mm to avoid ooing of 2nd register.Every instruments have too much elevation! The amount of vented air should be minimized.
2)The direction of barrel. It has a certain direction to emit better tone! Rotate it to find the best position.
3)Place the reed stringently symmetrical. This can enhance response often.
4)Mouthpiece insertion should be stringently straight to the barrel.
5)Placement of ligature. It should not be too upper-positioned.

Not in my youth! I didn't play clarinet then.

1)Kasper-cicero #13 mouthpiece(very long tapered)

Hiroshi - my teacher has a couple of Ann Arbors (#2 & #3) and a couple of Cicero (#12 and #13) (1). One of the Ann Arbors (#2) works for me; the other 3 don't.
-----
2)Bonard inverted ligature
-----
Is "OK" on my clarinet - my Rovner & Luyben work better.
-----
3)MORRE reeds(invented by Robert Marcelus of Cleveland Phil) not available now.Its profile resembles that of V12 of Vandoren.
----
No idea. Never played them.
----
4)Moennig barrel. This barrel has reverse taper and invented with late legendary Ralph McLane.
----
Or maybe a new barrel by Pyne or Chadash or Fobes or ...
----
5)Buffet customized by Moennig.
----
Never tried one.

The other suggestions you make (except for the reed being perfectly symmetrical. That doesn't always work. Some reeds play better off to one side or another; I mark those reeds.

I still posit that the components of a clarinet need to be tried before you buy - even ones with wonderful stories behind them.

(1) My teacher's lived in Ann Arbor most of his life. When he was young he lived near Frank L. Kaspar and bought his mouthpieces direct from him. My teacher's teacher (in high school until grad school) was Stubbins, and Stubbins introduced my teacher to Frank L. .

The other Kaspar (Frank, nephew of Frank L.) was the "Cicero" Kaspar.
