 The Ox RIP

Someone else had started a discussion of John Entwhistle in the midst of something else but I thought should be a new topic.

John Entwhistle was an amazing musician. Someone who was both a virtuoso on his instrument and who reinvented the role of his instrument in rock music. I read an interview in which John said that he played bass guitar as a bass, lead and rhythm instrument simultaneously. Many people have also characterized Keith Moon as playing lead drums. Having that rhythm section allowed Pete Townshend to invent his own unique style of guitar playing. As anyone who watched the benefit concert for New York could attest, the most powerful exciting rock band in the world.

Often, clarinet players post items on this board about wanting to get involved in a high school jazz band or whatever group but finding that conventional wisdom says there is no role for a clarinet. We should all take a lesson from Entwhistle and the Who about breaking those conventions.

Eileen....
I mentoned Entwistle in a thread earlier...not surprised that musicians realize his worth. You stated very well what his talent was and how he used it....
I not only discovered the Who and their talent early(1966 at the Filmore in San Fran) but kept up with them through the whole spectrum of their growth. I saw them in concert at least 2 dozen times and it never got old. Even fortunate enough to have spent time with them backstage at two different concerts. Boy can I tell you some stuff about them personally. Was at the Cow Palace when Moon passed out and they asked for a substitute from the audience.
At the time I was playing rock drums professionally and just missed the opportunity to hit the stage first and "fill in".
Anyway....John Entwistle was the greatest bass player in rock. And maybe in any form of music. His fingers flew like a flamenco guitarist....and the sound thundered through the halls.....
Thanks for your post.....

While it is often a shocking revelation for us clarinetists, there is "another world" outside of clarinetistry where musical genious abounds. And it is tragic that the music of those talented (other) musicians is often silenced far too soon--for themselves, and for us, their admiring public. For those that are left, take care--for those that have departed, may God bless.....and thanks for sharing a while.

The Who is easily one of the greatest bands ever. I think Enwhistle is easily one of the greats of the last century and is a real inspriation no matter the style. He was also a good horn player as well.
