reed combination works for you ?

I currently use a Jimmy Yan that is similar to a Vandoren 5RV but has a long facing. I have been using Zonda 3.5 J&K substrengths.
I have also used a Vandoren B45 with Vandoren traditional 3 reeds.

I have a Selmer BT (1934) and play a Greg Smith Chedevelle copy #1 facing and V-12 3.5's. I also have a Centered Tone (1953) and I use a Pyne mouthpiece with it. I can't remember the facing number. I also have some others that I swap from time to time. I've got more mouthpieces than any one person on this earth really needs. One of my other favorites is a D Bonade. It is marked 7 1/4 on the side. All play a little differently. Let me see, yes, there is a open mouthpiece that I use occassionally that I just got a few months ago. It is a Denman/Watson in an open facing. I use a V-12 3 or Superial DC 3.5 with it.

I also have a Sel CT, 1952-3, .590"/15mm UJ bore. Its my [now]#1], for it my best combo is a VD 11.6 with a LaVoz med-med hard [clipped] reed, or VD 2 1/2-3. Great in the chal and clarion, dont play in the alt. anymore! My refaced [to a 5RVL] glass is only fair [for me]. The CT is now loaned to a cl [H S ] teacher, will report what he says re: his B 45 etc. Don

I'll count mouthpieces with you anytime John. John Butler was nice enough to let me audition several of the fine big bore clarinets that he has refurbished and I found that after trying several very open faced mouthpieces that a couple of my standards that I use with my older R-13 (a Fobes, Smith, and Hawkins)that are a little more open and played with a little softer reed (about a 1/2 strength lower) gave me the best control (maybe just because I am used to them?). I would get a big bore clarinet for jazz work but bending notes on the old horns just wore me out by the end of a gig - they do have a nice big sound however. I have a very tonal ear and unless I can get the note close it drives me nuts. Most of the older big bore horns that I have tried have a few of these notes that are not right on and must be coaxed with embrochure. Perhaps the more experienced or younger, stronger players do not notice these quirks so much.

All is forgiven, Doc Omar, in spite of my being a reasonably good speller, having an English-major wife and using the spelling/phrasing AOL "corrector", I find "flaws" still creep thru, but blame it on my typing!! Don
