 Beginner Mouthpieces
Author: ted

A friend of mine has a daughter who has been playing clarinet for one year in Jr. High school. He is about to purchase her first clarinet (she was apparently renting before) and has asked me for suggestions for instruments. I plan on suggesting a Vito since that is the instrument that is used in most of the beginner bands here. But I'm not sure which mouthpieces are suitable for a second year student. ... any mouthpiece suggestions?

A Vandoren B45 is a good mouthpiece for students who have been playing for a short time.

Vandorens are excellent mouthpieces but a bit pricey for young players who are prone to accidental slippage, droppage and breakage.

Why not check out some of the excellent quality but low priced mouthpieces from the custom makers such as Fobes, Hawkins, Hite, Jewel, Pyne, Ridenour etc.?

From my limited recent experience, I can definitely recommend the Hite Premiere, which is a high quality, flexible and versatile clarinet mouthpiece selling for about $30.

BTW, if you buy a mp from one of these custom makers, don't be put off if you see scratch marks or rough areas in the mp chamber. These are file or abrasives marks resulting from the final hand finishing done by the mp maker.

i think vandoren is a good one- also, if they can rent or buy a wooden clarinet of a little higher quality than vito, that may be better. i know we're talking beginner, but i have one beginner who sounds horrible on her clarinet- i forget what it is, and sounds noticably better on mine with the same mouthpiece- so that makes a difference too. just, if there's a choice and the budget is right.
