 Pruefer clarinet! HELP!!!!
Author: Amy
Date:   2002-06-28 21:51

I recieved a clarinet as a gift when I was in the 6th grade, that would make it about 17 years ago. I know that my grandfather bought it from a local man...but I have no information about him. I have been searching and searching to find the age of this piece. The markings read Pruefer woodwinds, Providence RI. And the only numbers on it are 51 528. Could someone please help me? I would truly appreciate it!!!!!! Thanks

Pruefer quit making clarinets in the 1960s or 1970s. Their factory burned and they never resurrected this part of their business.

Based on the serial number and comparing it to the list available on this site, I would guess this instrument might be from the late 1950s or early 1960s.

Pruefer made a pretty good instrument.

I have what may be a much older, "single body" Pruefer 3/4 Full Boehm [my designation, 19 keys {no low Eb/B} 7 rings] which John Butler restored for me. Its serial no. is 2501, its UJ logo is PRUEFER MFGR PROV RI , below it is ?? T, below it B, all barely distinguishable. It has no barrel or UJ metal insert [if that is what "Silver Throat" implies], like my 1932 Selmer does! Did you date it. J B? I'll see if I can. Except for an irrepairable UJ post, its a good player! Haven't found #s, I estimate about 1920-30s via the B, keying, single-body and condition. Any Help?? Don

Just curious, Don B, how is the UJ post 'irrepairable'? What are you doing in lieu of fixing it? I mean, you can play it now - right?

I've seen posts ripped out, torn off, sawn off and broken off and some completely vanished as well - but they could be fixed. Not all were worth it but, they 'could've' been repaired before they landed in the dumpster where the cannibals got to 'em.

Ron - I hope J Butler may respond, I believe there is wood [support]gone, and that post has a spring which "trys" to turn it, [2nd finger hole] left hand, so the spring is very weak. Got a picnic "date", will look/play/repair-further tomorrow and try to respond. Don
