How difficultd is Bernstein's Prelude Fugue and Riffs? (like what?)
I want to do a recital tribute to Benny Goodman. I want to play the "Bennys' Gig", and a some Benny's songs. Do you know about other music can I do?

I have a couple of Goodman books. I have a wonderful old one that I bought on ebay. Check clarinetpuppy. I will email with some other urls after I get home from symphony. Have you considered the Copland piece that Goodman commissioned in the (I think 1950's)...there are recordings of the piece with COpland directing and Benny playing. I think they performed it together 3 times. Are you going to stick with swing? Benny also did classical pieces. I am thinking a Bartok.
If I am not mistaken I have a recording of Stoltzman playing the Bernstein. This project is similar to my master's project which will be both Goodman and my pal Shaw.

There's a whole CD out by Sabine Meyer (and I believe her brother also??) called "Homage (sp?) to Benny Goodman. I'm not sure of the current availablility due to EMI's constant fidgeting with their catalog, but check at Amazon and at Barnes & Noble's websites. You should at least be able to see a list of tunes they do on there.

Maybe not. I don't have time to wade through the over 200 listings they have for Bernstein but a quick search on "Bernstein Prelude" and "Bernstein Riffs" (with the entries in the appropriate search boxes) doesn't yield any hits.
I checked into this piece along time ago and I think I came to the conclusion that there is no piano reduction available and most likely none was ever done. Perhaps someone will correct me, however. I have an old Luyben Music Catalog that lists the piece under the "Solo Clarinet Part" section and indicates that the part is available "with score" which I interpret to be the full score (though I never called to ask). The Jazz Ensemble parts were only available on rental even back when this catalog was printed.
I've never looked at the part but, from recordings, the Bernstein sounds challenging. If you can't find it in a form you can use, there are a number of other "serious" works for clarinet that were dedicated to him. Instead of the Bernstein, you might consider the third movement of the Arnold Concerto No. 2. Another concerto written for him that gets virtually no attention is the Gordon Jenkins Concerto. (Jenkins also wrote a piece entitled "Goodbye, In Memory of Benny" after Goodman's death. Richard Stoltzman recorded it in a Bill Douglas arrangement.) I have also read that Goodman enjoyed playing Milhaud's "Scaramouche" in its clarinet version.

My B G book, "Benny , King of Swing" [pub. Morrow] has some 60+ pages of life/music discussion with many of the played/recorded pieces in italics, and many pics, check your library. Scanned but no find Cl Puppy and other mentions. Will look on my old records, all are at least good if not great! Don

In response to Jack, on www.sheetmusicplus.com if you go into the instrument section choosing clarinet as your instrument a Benny Goodman book of solos is ninth on the list. This was very easy to find. I have this book, along with a number of other Goodman solo books. I find their site very easy to navigate.

There are lots of books of transcriptions of Benny Goodman solos, readily available from any number of sources. They also turn up on eBay all the time. I was referring specifically to Bernstein's "Prelude, Fugue and Riffs." I thought that was a specific piece Ivan was exploring the possibility of doing. That's the one I don't think you can find at sheetmusic plus.

Per another thread on the Prelude, Fugue and Riffs (down the page a little), it appears there was a piano reduction published by Schirmer. It may be out of print and I can't find it in the Schirmer catalog (I can't even find Leonard Bernstein there) but perhaps someone more adept than me at using computer search engines might have more luck.
