Donald Montanaro began clarinet studies at the age of 12 with Joseph Gigliotti (a student of Bonade). Later study was with Jules Serpentini (2nd clarinetist - Philadelphia Orchestra) and finally Anthony Gigliotti at the Curtis Institute.
He was a member of the New Orleans Symphony before joining the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1957.
Montanaro has taught at Temple University and the Philadelphia College of the Performing Arts...GBK

Donald Montanaro also teaches at Curtis now and has for many years. His major teacher was Serpentini prior to going to Curtis. I hadn't heard that he studied with Joseph Gigliotti, although that wouldn't suprise me. If that is so it wasn't for a long period of time. Serpentini was also a student of Bonade as well as second clarinet for Bonade, McGinnis, Portnoy, McLane and Gigliotti (he played in Philadelphia 1920-1962). Genussa also studied with Serpentini for several years. A number of other principal players had studied with Serpentini too.
