one of my former teachers, Ronald Dekant, used to tell us that he learnt a lot from listening to Mclane- i remember him saying he'd spent hours working on Brahms 3, listening to Mclane and trying to "get it" as good as he did on the record.... (copying another player can be a really good way to learn- i'm not sure i Mr Dekant ever meant exactly that he tried to copy Mclane though, i always got the impression he was trying to tell us how inspired he had been).
i don't think Mr Dekant actually studied with Ralph Mclane though (he DID study with Bonade).

My teacher John Fullam. He also has one of Mr McLane's clarinet hanging up in his studio

I believe that David Weber studied with him too. McLane, himzself, I believe, studied with Gaston Hamelin.

According to Kalmen Opperman, McLane had very few students. In particular, he says David Weber and McLane were approximately the same age, and Weber was not a McLane student.

To hear how McLane sounded, get the CD reissue of the Dvorak Cello Concerto with Piatigorsky and Ormandy conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra. The piece is full of clarinet solos and shows McLane at his best.

John Fullam was born after McLane died.

I seem to remember that Fullam studied with Russianoff about the same time I did (early 70's), if this is the same person (principal in Buffalo).

The complete discography of Ralph McLane with the Philadelphia Orchestra (1943-1951) is listed in The Clarinet, Volume 19/Number 2 (Feb/March 1992)...GBK
