Can anyone loan me a Denner?
Author: Craig Hill

Hi!

The Brandenburg Orchestra in Sydney (Australia) is doing a suite from Rameau's Le Boreades in September. We need to borrow two baroque C clarinets at A=415. The orchestra is of course willing to pay for instrument freight & hire, and as one of their clarinet players I can assure that we will look after the instruments.

Anyone able to help us out?

Craig

I suggest you post this request on the Yahoo "Early Clarinet" group site, where it will be read by many collectors and a few antique-model-makers, who may be able to help you. Luck, Don

Maybe try the shrine to music museum. I do not know if they loan out their instruments as you suggested but I am sure that it would not hurt to ask.

there website is: www.usd.edu/smm/

good luck on your search!

If you can identify how early a clar you need, [wasn't the Denner merely a chalemeau, with a primitive register key?] , you might get some response. Several museums, prehaps the Shrine and/or the Fiske, etc might respond, since they have some very early [few-keyed] insts. Luck Don

To add to the above, Brymer's "Clarinet" has very good discussions of the Denners' contributions, a number of refs. pg 22 +, which might help to define the insts. needed for the Rameau [1749-51? per Lawson]. I'd suggest asking Al Rice [Claremont-Fiske] for his assistance in this Early Clarinet search. Luck, Don
